2017 It’s All About Science Festival


Casey Carle and BubbleMania! are celebrating science with us in Sioux Falls. Learn about the science of bubbles through an artistic, entertaining performance by performer and  bubble-ologist Casey Carle.  Visit http://bubblemania.com/ to learn more!

Each show is 30 minutes and showtimes are: 10:30, 11:30, 1:00, 2:30, and 3:30

Mad Science of Minnesota: Mystery of Chemistry:

Mystify your mind through exploration of Chemistry with the “Mad Scientist” JD.  Slime, chemical reactions, melting foam, and more.  Mad Science will host 3 stage performances and will be providing a make and take balancing bird act at their creation station exhibit booth.

Each show is 1 hour and showtimes are: 9:30, 12:30, and 3:15

SD Discovery Center STARLab: 

Pierre’s SD Discovery Center will be on-site providing tours of outer-space inside the StarLab.  Join Rhea on a tour of the Lakota Constellations.

Each show is 30 minutes and showtimes are: 9:30, 10:30, 11:30, 1:00, 2:00, 3:00, 4:00

Interview a Scientist (STEM professional)

Visitors at the Science Festival are invited to showcase their professions by connecting directly with regional STEM professionals.  They will demonstrate some of the cool parts of their jobs and address questions regarding the science, training, and environment associated with their careers.

Scientists are on-site from 10:30 am-12:30 noon and again from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm.

TSP ARCHITECTURE: Penny Bridge Challenge


TSP Architecture provides planning, architectural, and engineering expertise in design solutions for Healthcare, Education, and Government buildings. At the TSP Architecture booth you will have the opportunity to learn how form and design impact the strength of a paper bridge to support an ever increasing load of pennies.


The Center for Brain and Behavior Research (CBBRe) is based at The University of South Dakota and focuses on researching the nervous system and behavior. The CBBRe supports research, training, and education in neuroscience and behavioral science.  Attendees will have the opportunity to explore a real sheep brain and learn about the fascinating power and different parts of the nervous system.  An educational presentation will highlight diseases and disorders of the brain and how scientists study them.


Sanford Research is a team of biomedical scientists studying human health. Sanford Research’s The Sanford PROMISE creates experiences in biomedical science for K-12 students, teachers, and the community: their goal is to increase community understanding of science, raise awareness of the benefits of research and emphasize the role of both.  At the Sanford PROMISE exhibit you will have an opportunity to learn about the chemistry of candy through an Experiment (chromatography) with skittles – you’ll even be able to take supplies home to show your friends/family what you learned.


The Children’s Museum of South Dakota offers a fun and entertaining environment that promotes learning through interactive, informal, hands-on exhibits and programs. Children and adults of all ages will find learning opportunities in science, engineering, art, literature, culture, geography, and history.  Let your imagination soar at the Children Museum’s booth in a Wind Tunnel.  Explore the effects moving air has on different objects, including your very own creation from everyday materials!

MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE, SDSU: Medical Laboratory Science – The Behind the Scene of Health Care

The medical laboratory science profession is an ever changing and growing career in health care. A laboratory scientist works behind the scenes to provide the lab results that assist physicians in providing quality care in the diagnosis of patients.   Attendees at this booth will have the chance to look through a microscope and see what an MLS would see.  View blood samples from a patient with cancer, bacteria that make us sick and parasites we may un-expectantly pick up from food, travel, and/or hygiene.


Examining the sources and fate of pollution in a water shed

The Sustainability Program and Missouri River institute at the University of South Dakota raises interest and knowledge of the Missouri River and its basin through research, education and public outreach. Attendees can view firsthand how water flows through a watershed both above and underground.  Learn how point source and non-point source pollutants move in a watershed and their ultimate fate.


GWIS is a nation-wide organization that strives to connect, lead, and empower women in science. The Eastern South Dakota chapter works with women in our area by connecting them with women in other science disciplines, participating in educational and outreach events, and empowering them through leadership building. Attendees will have the chance to meet female scientists in STEM fields, and take a scientist selfie in our photo booth.  Take your photo home as a reminder that you too can become a scientist!

BUTTERFLY HOUSE & AQUARIUM: Salt Water Vs. Fresh Water – The Density Challenge

The Butterfly House & Aquarium brings the ocean and rainforest to the prairie with hands-on experiences with sharks, stingrays, and other unique creatures from across the world.  Attendees at this booth can participate in the density challenge. Discover the density difference between salt and fresh water by testing what sinks and what floats.

DELTA DENTAL OF SOUTH DAKOTA: Protecting our teeth from tooth decay

Delta Dental of South Dakota is an oral health benefit provider. They work to improve oral health and hygiene by emphasizing preventive care, because they believe that everyone deserves to enjoy a health smile.  At the Delta Dental booth attendees will learn about the bacteria that lives in our mouths, how eating and drinking certain foods can dissolve enamel, and ways we can protect our teeth.  Participants will have an opportunity to place a “sealant” on a tooth to protect the biting surface by forming a protective shield from harmful bacteria.


SOUTHEAST TECH: High Tech High Touch Sonography Professions

Southeast Tech educates individuals for dynamic and rewarding careers that promote lifetime success and meet the workforce needs of our region. Focus is on career-building technical education including STEM related career paths in electronics, engineering, information technology, and medical technologies.   Participants at the Southeast Tech booth will learn about medical sonography, a world where human anatomy and physiology collide with the physics of sound. Attendees will have the opportunity to use diagnostic medical sonography equipment to produce gray scale, Color Doppler and Spectral Doppler images with the guidance of experienced, credentialed sonographers.

WASHINGTON PAVILION – KIRBY SCIENCE CENTER: Space – An out of this World Experience!

The Kirby Science Discover Center at the Washington Pavilion offers an interactive environment to educate, entertain, inspire, and enrich the community by making arts and sciences part of our life. Attendees at this booth will experience an Out-Of-This-World Experience as you get hands-on with Earth and Space concepts.  Stop by to make a cloud, investigate gravity, explore icy worlds, create eclipse art and learn about this year’s Total Solar Eclipse.

HOOD MAGAZINE: Pool of Slime

Hood Magazine is a resource magazine for local families who value spending time together.  Attendees at this booth will learn how to make slime and get a chance to test it out in a pool of slime!

USGS EROS CENTER: Earth From Space

The USGS EROS Center is the main remotely sensed data receiving facility for the Landsat Satellite Program, the longest and most comprehensive record of Earth’s condition ever assembled. EROS strives to contribute to the understanding of a changing Earth.   At the USGS EROS Center exhibit you will be able to talk about the science of remote sensing. You can view examples of satellite imagery and see firsthand the value of monitoring land cover change over time.   Hands-on activities allow participants to search for items in aerial and satellite images, a matching game of before and after earth shots, and make a model of the electromagnetic spectrum with beads.


The Center for Health Outcomes and Prevention Research (CHOPR) specializes in population, translational, and public health research. The team is committed to improving health through education and research in prevention and research in prevention, health outcomes in our local communities, and the population at large.  At the CHOPR booth you will have to opportunity to test your knowledge through games and trivia. The SD DENR Geological Survey Program performs scientific investigations to gather information on South Dakota’s geological and hydrologic resources. This information helps us to better understand the geology and hydrology of our state, efficient resource development and protection, greater economic development, and better quality of life for South Dakotans.  Participants at the Geological Survey Program exhibit will be introduced to the prehistory creatures of South Dakota. Attendees will not only learn about what kinds of prehistoric animals lived in South Dakota, but where in the state their fossils can be found and how they can be used to interpret South Dakota’s ancient environments.

USD STUDENT CHAPTER OF SOCIETY FOR BIOMATERIALS: Ferrofluids, Lava Lamps, and Strawberry DNA Extraction

The Society for Biomaterials at USD is a student chapter dedicated to furthering the understanding of biomaterials and new technologies. Increasing community interest in Biomedical Engineering is an important aspect of the society’s community outreach.   Participants at this booth will participate in hands on activities including strawberry DNA extraction.  Learn about states of matter and density with sublimed CO2 in a bubble.  Make magnetic slime with borox, glue, and iron filings or liquid starch, glue, and iron filings. See a demonstration of solubility and emulsions in a lava lamp made of vegetable oil, water, and alka seltzer tablets.   Discuss genetics and mutations and how they can decide unique differences among one another like hair color.  Take part in an interactive color blind test and learn how genetics can also cause serious medical conditions.


MCCROSSAN BOYS RANCH: Horse Drawn Wagon Rides

The McCrossan Boys Ranch provides counseling services and specialized education services to young boys, ages nine to 20, who have experienced conflict in their lives and also offer specialized services to help them heal and grow intellectually. Attendees at this booth will have the opportunity to go on a wagon ride, which is pulled by a beautiful Belgian horse.

SIOUX EMPIRE GEM AND MINERAL SOCIETY: South Dakota Rocks, Minerals, and Geology

The Sioux Empire Gem and Mineral Society provides an education, family friendly environment to share the hobby and knowledge of the earth sciences, fossil identification, rock collecting, lapidary and more topics. Attendees at this booth will have the opportunity to view a display of rocks and minerals found in South Dakota and the surrounding region.


ARCHITECTURE INCORPORATED: Oculus Rift Virtual Reality and 3D Printing

Architecture Incorporated is the largest architectural firm in South Dakota and is comprised of registered architects and interior designers. They are proud and passionate of their customer service and put the client first in order to deliver timely and cost effective designs.  Participants at this booth will virtually view some of the newest architectural designs and have the opportunity to “walk around” the building as if they were actually there!  They will also learn about 3D printing, its capabilities and how it is used in the world of architecture.

AUGUSTANA UNIVERSITY: Analysis of Trace Gases Using Cavity-Enhanced Laser Spectroscopy

Augustana University is a liberal arts university located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They offer over 50 major fields of study as well as several pre-professional programs.  Participants at this booth can learn about the use of spectroscopy and how it might someday be used to detect and diagnose diseases.

Join Faculty from the Natural Sciences Division at Augustana for hands-on activities which are sure to spark curiosity and inspire a desire to explore science.


SANFORD HOT AIR BALLOON: Balloon Display and Science of Ballooning

Learn about the fascinating world of hot air balloons. Get up close to a balloon basket and other ballooning equipment, kids can even get their pictures taken in the balloon basket.  Learn about the science and faces of balloons and ballooning.


The SDSU Aviation Program aims to promote aviation to the next generation through hands on activities. Participants at this booth will have the opportunity to learn about the world of aviation and have the ability to fly a computer based flight simulator.  Learn about basic aerodynamic principles through hands on diagrams and experiments.

EmBe : FIRST LEGO League and Youth Development Summer Camp Offerings

EmBE is a local organization dedicated to providing programs for girls and women of the community. They strive every day to achieve a place of empowerment where women succeed, and children and youth thrive.  Visit the EmBE booth to learn about the wide variety of summer camps offered at EmBE.  Summer camps include opportunities to build science, technology, and engineering skills, learn about leadership and community involvement opportunities, and more!

POET: Clean, Green, Homegrown BioFuels

At POET, we are constantly using science to develop new technologies to become more efficient and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. Attendees at the POET booth will have the opportunity to learn and explore the ethanol biorefinery process, and how we use locally grown corn to produce fuel for our vehicles as well as other renewable products.

FUTURESCAPE 3D LLC: The Future of Medical 3D Printing

Futurescape 3D is South Dakota’s first dedicated 3D print lab. They utilize the newest technology in order to instigate and fast track the innovation process for small businesses and inventors.  Visit their booth to learn how 3D printing is being used in the medical field today and how it might be used in the future!

SANFORD HEALTH: Explore Healthcare Careers & Moulage

Sanford Health is one of the largest health systems in the nation. They also offer educational experiences and training for undergraduates, graduate students, clinicians, scientists and industry professionals.  Attendees to the Sanford booth can explore health care through hands on activities and Moulage face painting to simulate bumps and bruises.

USD WIMS: Doctor for a Day

Do you ever wonder what it’s really like to be a doctor? Attendees can meet doctors, residents and medical students, and participate in hands-on activities relating to health care.
